This post was one that led us to get busy with prisons and prisoners for years the accelerated course is now the main way of doing in prison that god, as most prisoners are held and assessed in holding prisons for about 3 weeks and then sent to different category prisons where hopefully there is more of a chance to work on their issues, some are substance and need that help some are sex offenders and need that some have anger issues and some just need to understand the harm of their actions like thieves etc. The big problem with prisons is we finally got good coverage and then they decided not to do the immunity test at 3 months. This led some of the best nurses to quit in disgust as it means we now have no idea who has HBV and could be dying of HBV and who is not responding to vaccination and catching it usually from the tattoos. Anyone offering to tattoo in prison is highly likely to have HBV and infect. We found our teach the staff how to vaccinate was able to save Chelmsford and other prisons thousands and thousands in costs if they do it themselves it costs £6 if they buy in they cost from £60 to £100 pounds over hundreds of prisoners a year this is serious money wasted. However you always have to watch them as they steal the needles! Finally with prisons our "Convicts to carers" effort really did work! We trained prisoners with HBV to first understand diet the liver and blood tests, then to understand their vaccinations and treatments, then we qualified them to counsel the hbv and hcv patients in the prison then on release taught them to test and vaccinate the public and also fund raise and campaign to politicians and health policy types. Amazing they he was a crimm with a horiid virus and now there he is capable to save almost any individual from HBV and advising rooms full of Sirs and Dames. Very proud of him we are.
