Hi Paul
I m calling from Hong Kong so am unable to ring free phone numbers from abroad. My dilemma is whether to give my baby the hep b vaccine. We are UK residents but now live in HK. At home they don't give the hep b vaccine but here all newborns have it before they leave hospital. The hospital are keen to give it to my little boy (now 4 weeks old). I really am unsure what to do for the best.

This poor lady had a baby in Hong Kong and had googled and heard the HBV vaccination had side effects. We had to explain that the NHS info about HBV that paints it as a virus caught by Many partner Gays/Straight sexual types, By Drug Addicts, their health workers and the Unhygienic mainly. Is just politically correct nonsense that avoids stating that 80% of Hong Kong and the entire Far East is infected mainly during early childhood. This utterly amazed her. We pointed out she is in a nation (China) where 1 in 10 are incurable for the lasting form of HBV also and infectious all the time in their blood, which amazed her even more. The clincher was when we pointed out 200 nations i.e. even war zones and failed states all try to vaccinate before baby is over 4 weeks to avoid infection. The "side effect" she was assured was real by her good friend multiple sclerosis has actually boomed as fast in the UK as other developed nations and yet we as a nation use the HBV vaccination 98% less than anywhere else on Earth kinda 100% proving there is absolutely no link at all. In Hong Kong the maternity unit were also completely stunned anyone on Earth is unvaccinated, never mind an entire nation!
I remember this same period we had UK doctors sent back from China as they had forgotten to get HBV immunity bloods done and had an NHS polish nurse in flames about why they do not do this vaccination and why she has to wait 3 months to take her baby to Warsaw where as she put it they know what they are doing. we estimate in the UK with the child wards testing 0.7% for HBV 2007 to 2013 that at least 30,000 children are infected/sacrificed to HBV. Simply so politicians and political doctors can keep saying "Migrants do not have more HBV and children are not at risk to the white british population".
The maddest thing about all this is 10 years of campaigning and commons questions we have been promised universal childhood immunisation without any seeming plan to 1 find the thousands of poor kids infected or 2 offer catch up vaccinations to their forgotten generation. AAARRRGGGHHH.
Finally the actual admission that HBV is onward to endemic community children as aggressively as chicken pox as a medical fact may never emerge as it is somehow not a politically correct thing to say. I am certain I am the only Charity Head on Earth writing books on how to cope if your child catches HBV and in the US our sister charity estimates at least 400,000 US child infections have been avoided since 1990 when they began vaccinating here in the UK in 2014 in our House of Commons our minister for health admitted we as a nation have noted 3 children catching HBV to date. I one man on a helpline have spoken to 6 in a week! Forgive the endless post but these are our children catching something unnecessarily that leaves them 1% dying at sixteen. AAARRRRGGGGHHHH. We must fight this all of us.
